SGA approves soccer club

The buzz around the Dale Mabry campus is for the new soccer club that is forming at the school. It is an intramural sport which consists of both men and women’s squads. The teams will be the first intramural sports teams at Hillsborough Community College which is surprising since the school is the largest community college in Florida without an intramural sports program.

The president of the Soccer club Daryn Bohner said, “It all begins with Matt Barrett, as he works for the International Students Center that we have, and the international students asked ‘Why don’t we have a soccer team?’ So, he then went about the preliminaries of getting it all started.” Bohner added, “The tasks of getting the field certified and the insurance taken care of are underway and we should have that done by spring break.”

Florida being one of the most popular places in the states for soccer, it is expected that the club and soccer program will have the potential to do bigger and better things. The soccer teams will be men’s and women’s traveling teams with between 13-18 players each. They would also like to pursue having an all-star game and there is a possibility of the team being NJCAA sanctioned. The team had a turnout of 50 people on February 14, 2013 that wanted to participate.

Teams will be selected on March 5 and the season begins March 18 right after spring break.
