The MOVEit hack has affected approximately 900 schools, according to the National Student Clearinghouse, an educational nonprofit that provides reporting, verification, and research services to colleges and universities across North America.
Earlier this year, a ransomware group obtained access to data belonging to thousands of companies and millions of individuals by exploiting a vulnerability in the MOVEit controlled file transfer program.
The hackers were able to steal files through SQL injection on public servers. This mass breach has been named the largest hack of the year so far.
According to Emsisoft, a cybersecurity company that has been tracking the firms that have been directly and indirectly damaged, the total number of victims reached 2,053 on Sept. 22 and the overall number of people affected has surpassed 57 million.
The MOVEit attack targeted many large enterprises and organizations, including the US Department of Energy and energy behemoths Schneider Electric and Shell.
According to the National Student Clearing- house, the information hacked includes names, dates of birth, contact information, SS number, student ID number, and school-related records such as degrees and enrollment records. Hillsborough County has already contacted over 70,000 persons whose personal data has been compromised; while County files were not particularly targeted, Hillsborough County may be affected as a MOVEit customer.
