Hillsborough Community College has teamed up with TECO to provide a cutting edge Electrical Line Worker Training Program.
A game-changing program that began in the fall is now available to assist students in igniting their careers in the electric utility industry. TECO Energy Inc. is a subsidiary of Emera Incorporated and an energy-related holding company situated in Tampa, Florida. Every year, TECO has pledged to donate $300,000 for scholarships and equipment. “After months of preparation, the Brandon Campus is delighted to partner with TECO to launch our Electrical Line Worker Program this fall,” said Dr. Deborah Kish, HCC Brandon Campus President, in an HCC news release.
After completing the four-month curriculum, students are given the opportunity to interview for high-demand entry level electric line labor positions. Hourly wages begin at $26.98 and can rise to $50 per hour or more in five years.
TECO is committed to the safety of its employees and provides a good benefits package that includes health insurance, retirement benefits, and ample vacation time. Over the course of four months, the curriculum will contain 420 hours of training. The curriculum combines typical classroom work, such as completing virtual learning modules, with hands- on experiences that assist students in fulfilling the physical demands of the job, such as climbing poles that can reach several feet in height. Students will learn what they need to know to confidently handle the demands of the profession; they will graduate with certificates in CPR & AED, first aid, and OSHA 10-hour.
