On February 25th, the Hillsborough Community College Women’s Basketball team held their breast cancer awareness game. Fans were encouraged to wear pink, and t-shirts were sold to raise proceeds for breast cancer awareness funds. This was also the final home game for the 2011-2012 sophomores.
The Lady Hawks were matched against the visiting Santa Fe College Saints for their final regular season game. The contest started with a highly competitive first half, in which the Saints held a one point lead after 20 minutes of play. The Lady Hawks came out of halftime with a slow start, falling 11 points down to their adversaries. Midway through the second half, the momentum started to shift in the Hawks direction. Sophomore point guard, Yashira Delgado, stole the ball and led a fast break that gave them two points, cutting into the Saints lead. The Hawks followed this with another defensive stop that earned them the possession arrow. The next offensive sequence would be the team’s highlight of the night. Freshman Petra Erceg delivered a long range three point shot that brought the deficit to four points, with plenty of time remaining.
However, this would be the closest the Hawks would come to matching the Saints. The Saints took advantage of foul shot situations and seized control of the momentum in the final minutes of the game. The final score was Santa Fe College 64, Hillsborough Community College 53.
The HCC Women’s basketball team finished the regular season with an 8-4 record in conference play, and a 16-11 mark overall. Their next game will be in the FCSAA/NJCAA Region 8 State Tournament. The state tournament will be held March 8th-10th at Milton H. Johnson Health Center, Chipola College in Marianna, Georgia.

I have been at that game. To bad we lost. But it was a great last game, especially because they almost turned it around after the half time.
