Athlete of the month: Michael Abreu Jr.
Michael Abreu Jr. is the Hawkeye Athlete of the Month. The Key West native is a veteran presence on the Hawks’ baseball team and helped the Hawks reach the postseason for the first time in multiple years, last season. The sophomore 2nd baseman is a standout athlete who is in the middle of an impressive second year campaign.
He leads the team with a .393 batting average, with 42 hits in 120 at bats. He also leads the team in slugging percentage at .598 and stolen bases (11). Abreu is also tied for first in the nation in triples with seven this season. Abreu has proved to be a more than competent leadoff hitter for the Hawks this year, setting up other hitters for 24 runs batted in (he has 26 in total, but two are a result of his two homeruns).
Abreu’s prowess at the plate, however, should not overshadow his ability in the field. Abreu has a fielding percentage of .911. Abreu makes up half of the middle infield tandem that has shown bursts of athleticism and the ability to layout and make a play.
Abreu looks to continue his assault on opposing pitchers throughout the season, with an eventual trip to the Florida College System Activities Association state tournament. if he manages to continue to have success at the plate and on the base path, this would be the second consecutive FCSAA tournament that Abreu has helped lead the Hawks.
